Oscar Piastri outlines McLaren’s uphill battle as Mercedes and Ferrari stay ahead in Formula 1 pecking order
McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has acknowledged that the Woking-based team still faces a considerable challenge before it can consistently fight for Formula 1 victories against rivals Mercedes and Ferrari. While recent upgrades have delivered encouraging signs, the Australian believes McLaren has not yet reached the level required to win races on outright pace.
After the opening rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season, McLaren finds itself third in the Constructors’ Championship. Mercedes has established a commanding advantage at the front, while Ferrari, led by Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, remains ahead in second place. The standings highlight the work still required if McLaren hopes to rejoin the battle for race wins and championship contention.
Several costly setbacks have contributed to the points deficit. Poor starts in Australia and China prevented the team from maximizing strong qualifying performances, while a difficult weekend at the Canadian Grand Prix further damaged McLaren’s championship campaign.
Montreal proved particularly frustrating for the British squad. Both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris began the race on intermediate tyres despite rapidly improving track conditions. The strategy gamble failed to deliver the expected advantage and ultimately left the team struggling throughout the race.
Adding to McLaren’s problems, Lando Norris was forced to retire after suffering a gearbox issue, while Oscar Piastri received a time penalty following contact with Alexander Albon that resulted in the Williams driver retiring from the race. The Australian eventually crossed the line outside the points, capping off a disappointing weekend for the team.
Despite the setback, McLaren remains convinced that its development programme is moving in the right direction. The team introduced a substantial package of upgrades earlier in the season, helping secure a one-two finish in the Miami Sprint, and continued to refine the MCL40 with additional improvements in the races that followed.
Reflecting on the progress made since Miami, Oscar Piastri suggested that there were positive indicators hidden beneath the disappointing results. The Australian explained that the team had identified several areas where performance had improved and felt that the latest developments were beginning to deliver measurable gains.
According to Oscar Piastri, McLaren has succeeded in reducing part of the performance gap to Mercedes over recent races. While the Silver Arrows remain the benchmark, he indicated that McLaren’s pace has become increasingly competitive, particularly during longer stints and in specific race conditions.
The Australian also suggested that track position remains crucial for McLaren’s chances. He noted that when the team manages to qualify strongly and maintain position during the race, it is often capable of matching the pace of its direct rivals. However, he stressed that further gains are still needed from both the chassis and power unit if McLaren wants to consistently challenge at the front.
For now, Oscar Piastri believes race victories remain slightly out of reach on pure performance. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the gap is no longer overwhelming and that McLaren is moving closer to the leading group. With a busy development schedule still ahead and several key upgrades expected during the remainder of the season, the team remains optimistic that it can continue closing the gap to Mercedes while also putting pressure on Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
Although McLaren is not yet in a position to dominate Grand Prix weekends, the trajectory appears encouraging. If the team can convert its technical progress into stronger qualifying performances, cleaner race executions and more effective strategy calls, it could soon become a regular contender in the battle involving Mercedes, Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc at the sharp end of the Formula 1 grid.
