In an interview with Autosport, Oscar Piastri reflected on a season that has so far seen him emerge as one of the absolute protagonists of Formula 1. With six race victories and four pole positions already secured in 2025, the Australian driver of McLaren has confirmed his constant upward trajectory since making his debut in the sport in 2023. Over just a few years, he has demonstrated an increasingly solid mix of technical ability, mental resilience, and maturity behind the wheel.
During his first two seasons with McLaren, Oscar Piastri paid a heavy price for the difference in experience compared to his teammate Lando Norris. The gap between the two drivers was evident both on track and in the final drivers’ standings of 2023 and 2024, where Norris clearly had the upper hand. Piastri had talent, but he was still learning how to apply it consistently at the highest level of motorsport.
The 2025 campaign, however, has been a turning point. “It’s rare to have the opportunity to fight for wins almost every weekend. In my first two years I was still developing my strengths, but this year I’ve been able to bring them out with much more consistency. It’s a great satisfaction,” explained Oscar Piastri. His evolution has translated into increasingly complete performances, with races such as Bahrain and Barcelona standing out as examples where the balance between raw speed and race management proved to be absolutely perfect.
One of the areas where the Australian driver has made the most progress is tire management, which has improved significantly since his rookie season in 2023. Alongside that, he has also learned how to maximize his potential right from qualifying. “Last year, I made some races more difficult for myself because of poor qualifying sessions. I worked hard to understand how to improve in that area, and the progress has been visible in the races as well,” he revealed.
The secret to this development, according to Piastri, lies in a scientific and highly structured approach. He has relied on detailed data analysis, adjustments to his driving style on specific corners and circuits, and reinforcement of both mental focus and physical preparation. In modern Formula 1, where the difference between a race win and a bitter disappointment can be measured in fractions of a second, these fine margins are decisive.
The bond with race engineer Tom Stallard
Equally crucial has been his relationship with his race engineer, Tom Stallard, which has now reached a peak of understanding and synergy. The connection between driver and race engineer is often one of the most decisive ingredients in building victories and championships. Legendary partnerships in Formula 1 history prove this point: the almost symbiotic relationship between Lewis Hamilton and Peter Bonnington at Mercedes, where every radio exchange turned into a strategic advantage, or the technical complicity between Max Verstappen and Gianpiero Lambiase at Red Bull Racing, where their communication is a vital part of the Dutchman’s success.
At McLaren, Oscar Piastri and Tom Stallard have managed to create a similar bond, one built on mutual trust, clear communication, and the ability to adapt to each other’s needs. This stands in sharp contrast to what has often happened at Ferrari, where frequent engineer rotations and communication issues have made it difficult for drivers to establish long-lasting working relationships, with inevitable consequences on performance.
Piastri himself explained the step forward he has made thanks to Stallard: “At the beginning I came from single-make categories where you couldn’t really change much on the car. In Formula 1, instead, you can adapt the car to your own needs. It took me some time to really understand what I wanted, but now Tom knows how to read my requirements and fill in the gaps when I have doubts.”
Methodical work, attention to detail, and consistent performances have transformed Oscar Piastri not only into a current favorite for the world championship but also into an example of how sporting maturity is built step by step. McLaren, on its side, benefits enormously from having a driver capable of interpreting the car’s potential without unnecessary complications, adapting quickly to the demands of different circuits, and extracting the maximum out of the package almost every weekend.
If 2023 was a year of learning and 2024 one of refinement, then 2025 is proving to be the season in which Oscar Piastri has truly found his real dimension in Formula 1. And with ten more races still to be contested, there is a strong sense that the best is yet to come for the young Australian driver.
