Max Verstappen’s biggest challenge revealed by Red Bull race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase. Max Verstappen’s race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase reveals that his biggest challenge is stubbornness.

A relationship built on trust and experience

Since Max Verstappen made his debut with the Red Bull Racing team, winning the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, the Dutch driver has had Gianpiero Lambiase by his side as his race engineer. Over the years, the bond between Verstappen and Lambiase has grown ever stronger, despite occasional tense moments over the radio, such as during the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix. Their collaboration has become one of the most closely watched and respected partnerships on the Formula 1 grid.

The challenge of working with Max

In the Red Bull podcast “Behind the Charge,” Gianpiero Lambiase offered insight into the more challenging aspects of Verstappen’s personality. He stated: “Max’s biggest limit is his stubbornness. He believes he knows everything, so trying to get inside his head and understand him is a real engineering challenge. I have learned to accept that even when he seems to reject your advice in the moment, he is actually absorbing it like a sponge and – even if he will never admit it – he ultimately does what you asked him to do.”

This statement highlights the unique dynamic between driver and engineer at Red Bull. While Max Verstappen’s confidence and determination can make him appear unyielding, Gianpiero Lambiase emphasizes that it is precisely this mindset that allows Verstappen to process complex instructions and execute them effectively on track.

Looking beyond the present

Gianpiero Lambiase also praised his driver while considering the long-term future, particularly in relation to the upcoming regulatory changes for 2026. He explained: “The team understands what he needs to extract the maximum performance from the car. And he understands what the team needs in terms of feedback to develop the car. I’m not just talking about the current season, but also for the years ahead. This will be crucial for the rule changes coming next season.”

Their mutual understanding and trust, forged over years of working together, is set to play a pivotal role as Red Bull adapts to new technical regulations, ensuring that Verstappen and the team remain at the forefront of Formula 1 competition.
