One year later: reversed one-two finish
Twelve months ago, Hungary gave Oscar Piastri his first Formula 1 victory after a rather controversial race in which the Australian crossed the finish line just ahead of his teammate Lando Norris. One year later, the positions have reversed, with the championship leader forced to swallow a bitter pill due to Lando Norris’s smart strategy. Norris, who found himself fifth at the first corner, decided to gamble on a single pit stop, catching all other contenders for the win by surprise.
In his final stint, Oscar Piastri tried to complete his comeback and even attempted a desperate overtaking move on his teammate—which almost turned into a dramatic crash—but in the end, it was the British driver who stood on the top step of the podium. Norris has now cut the gap in the championship standings to just nine points behind Piastri’s car number 81. After the race, Piastri expressed his regret over the missed victory first on the official F1 channel and later on Sky Sport F1.
Fun and frustration
“I pushed to the maximum. When I saw Lando taking the lead, I understood I would have to overtake him on track, which is easier said than done around here. Today we were simply on the wrong side,” the Australian commented. “Norris’s strategy? He didn’t have much to lose, so it wasn’t a big surprise. What I’m not sure about is whether trying to cover Charles Leclerc was the right choice in the end.”
“Am I angry about the result? No,” Oscar Piastri added, “I think there is always some frustration whenever you lose a race, especially by such a small margin. But it was a great battle. There are some things we need to review together with the team. Let’s say it’s a bittersweet result because it was a fun race, but when you lose by such a small margin, in the end there is a bit of frustration.”
