Oscar Piastri’s Ambition
Many see him as an outsider for the championship, a driver who could win the 2025 title only by defying expectations. However, in China, Oscar Piastri proved that he is already capable of aiming for the crown, dominating the Grand Prix and never allowing Lando Norris—who is considered the favorite for the championship—to get close, as Norris made several mistakes in Shanghai.
Oscar Piastri’s talent is undeniable, and McLaren was quick to seize the opportunity when his relationship with Alpine fell apart, securing the 2001-born driver. Rival teams are kicking themselves for missing out on him, and in the latest season of Drive to Survive, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner admitted that, given the choice between Oscar Piastri and Norris, he would pick the Australian. But when Oscar Piastri was looking for a way out of his Alpine contract in 2022, did he ever consider joining Red Bull, presumably as a high-profile second driver to Max Verstappen? The Australian dismissed the idea.
Oscar Piastri’s Words
“As far as I’m concerned, other teams were never an option,” the 23-year-old told The Times. “McLaren, both as a car and as an environment, is the place where I want to be. Many people would love to be here. I’m sure I can win with this team.” – he pointed out.
“I’m certainly not in this sport just to make up the numbers—I’m here to become world champion,” he added. “In the past two seasons, I’ve proven to myself, more than to anyone else, that I have what it takes to succeed. I don’t think I’ve reached my full potential yet, but I’m doing everything I can to get there as soon as possible. And when I’m at my best, I’m good enough to beat the strongest drivers.” – the McLaren driver concluded ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix.
