Since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, the Australian driver has firmly held the top spot in the standings thanks to his consistently strong and reliable performances. To date, Piastri has recorded zero retirements, achieved six race victories, and scored points in every one of the fourteen Grands Prix he has competed in so far this season.

However, in recent races, the points gap between Oscar Piastri and his McLaren teammate Lando Norris has significantly narrowed. After initially enjoying a 23-point lead, that advantage has now shrunk to just 9 points. This reduction can largely be attributed to Norris’s impressive form over the last few events. Despite this closer battle, Piastri has remained calm and confident. He explained that the largest lead he held this season was 23 points and that the gap has not fluctuated by more than around 10 points over the last ten races or so. Therefore, he does not feel overly concerned about the tightening championship fight. While acknowledging that additional points would have been beneficial, he does not believe the recent trend necessarily indicates a decline in his performance.

A challenge within a challenge
The Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest was a difficult race for Oscar Piastri, who had to settle for second place due to a strategy that was not perfectly executed. In the final laps, Piastri was running behind Norris but was unable to find the opportunity to overtake him. With just a few more laps, the outcome—and the championship narrative—might have been quite different. Piastri reflected that even a one-second difference in the race could have drastically changed the momentum. He pointed out that if things had gone differently in the last few races, the overall championship picture might have looked very different. However, he also noted that this kind of uncertainty and close competition is common across virtually all races and championship seasons, so he remains unfazed by the situation.

These upcoming three weeks of summer break provide the perfect opportunity for Oscar Piastri to recharge and prepare for the final phase of the season. There are still twelve races remaining, including three that feature the Sprint Race format. With enough time left to extend his lead over Lando Norris, the big question remains: can Oscar Piastri secure his first Formula 1 World Championship title in only his third season in the sport?
