A Turning Point in Piastri’s Career
In a Formula 1 driver’s career, there are crucial turning points that mark a clear before and after. For Oscar Piastri, such a moment came at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. On that day, the Australian driver secured his first-ever Formula 1 victory in a race filled with drama and strategic complexities. Initially, Piastri had dominated the race, but the outcome was heavily influenced by team orders from the McLaren pit wall. These orders were issued to rectify a strategic error that had allowed his teammate Lando Norris, who had been running in second place, to take the lead.
At the time, the decision to impose Piastri’s victory over Norris—who had been faster on track and was the primary challenger to Max Verstappen in the World Championship battle—sparked significant debate. Many viewed McLaren’s choice as potentially self-sabotaging in terms of their driver’s title ambitions, since Norris was seen as the more experienced and established contender for the championship. However, looking back a year later, that moment can be seen symbolically as the start of Oscar Piastri’s rising dominance.
No More Hierarchies, Piastri Takes Command
This weekend, Formula 1 returns to the Hungaroring, and since that 21st of July, no driver has won more races than Oscar Piastri. Over the past twelve months, the Melbourne-born driver has achieved eight Grand Prix victories, surpassing Lando Norris’s seven wins, Max Verstappen’s four, Charles Leclerc’s and George Russell’s two apiece, and the single victories scored by Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton.
More importantly, McLaren’s decision at Hungary in 2024 to restore the natural order determined by on-track pace—refusing to favor the more experienced Norris—clearly established the team’s internal dynamic. This decision made it evident to all fans and observers that there were no fixed team hierarchies, even with a potential title fight on the line.
By reinstating Piastri as the rightful race leader that day, McLaren sent a strong message to the Australian driver, guaranteeing him equal treatment and laying the foundation for this year’s championship battle. Since then, Piastri’s mental strength has become a key factor in his success. Despite having less experience than Norris, the #81 driver has proven to be more consistent and less prone to errors, further cementing his status as McLaren’s lead driver.
Now, a year later, Oscar Piastri aims to win again in Hungary to deliver a significant—though not yet decisive—blow to Lando Norris in their ongoing duel for the Formula 1 World Championship, a fight that currently features just the two of them as main contenders.
If, by the end of this year, the 24-year-old from Melbourne manages to clinch his first career World Championship, it will be said that his remarkable championship campaign began right here, at the Hungaroring, on that hot and unusual Sunday in July 2024.
