Warning signs are emerging from within the Haas camp ahead of the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, with Esteban Ocon confirming pre-weekend fears about the weather forecast. The French driver has openly acknowledged the possibility of heavy rainfall throughout the race weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, setting the stage for what could be a wildly unpredictable and chaotic Formula 1 event.
Ocon reflects on what might have been for Haas at Silverstone, where the team failed to capitalize on mixed conditions. But the Frenchman believes a similar opportunity could present itself again immediately—this time in Belgium—where unstable weather is already creating strategic uncertainty. Ferrari-powered teams like Haas could be in a position to benefit if the right calls are made.
Silverstone recently produced a surprising result when rain turned the British Grand Prix into a strategic puzzle. That race allowed Stake F1 Team’s Nico Hülkenberg to claim his first-ever Formula 1 podium after years of trying. However, despite running similar machinery, the Haas team could not take full advantage of the changing track conditions.
“Yeah, obviously it was fantastic for him, a really beautiful image,” Esteban Ocon said to the media, including GP-News.net, when asked about Nico Hülkenberg’s podium. “To see Nico pushing for so many years and finally getting that podium—which he fully deserved—was amazing.”
“I texted him right after the race to tell him how happy I was for him. I know how tough Formula 1 can be at times. And when you’re not in a car that’s consistently fighting for podiums, getting an opportunity like that feels like a win. I can only imagine how he felt, and honestly, he deserved it,” Ocon added.
The Alpine driver also took the moment to recall his most recent podium, which—like Hülkenberg’s—came during a wet race, in this case the 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos. “Yes, obviously, you need to seize those chances when they come—and they did that. I was on the podium last year in Brazil and I wasn’t supposed to be there.”
“It’s all about being there at the right time and making the right calls. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage that at Silverstone. I was battling Nico halfway through the race, but they did a better job than we did and deserved to be on the podium,” Ocon concluded.
Rain forecast at Spa: Haas preparing for redemption
If Haas failed to take advantage of the tricky conditions at Silverstone, things could unfold differently at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. This venue, nestled in the Ardennes forest, is well known for its unpredictable weather, often featuring rapid shifts between dry and wet conditions. According to Ocon, this year looks no different.
“We know anything can happen here,” Ocon stated. “I was just rewatching the 2010 race at Spa—the one where Sebastian Vettel had an incident at the chicane and Lewis Hamilton won. It kept raining throughout the race, then it dried, then it rained again. This kind of situation is very likely to happen again here.”
“So yes, you need to stay sharp. You have to push until the very end because anything can happen. And if you make the right decisions, you might just find yourself in the right place when it matters most,” Ocon said, underlining how vital strategy and timing will be this weekend.
With a volatile weather forecast and high-stakes racing on one of Formula 1’s most demanding tracks, the Belgian Grand Prix promises to be a dramatic and potentially career-defining event. And for teams like Haas, redemption could be just one bold call away.
