Williams has completed its driver line-up for the 2027 Formula 1 season by announcing a new multi-year contract for Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard has reaffirmed his faith in James Vowles’ rebuilding project despite the team’s difficult 2026 campaign, declaring that he remains as determined as ever to return Williams to the position it deserves.
The announcement follows confirmation that Alex Albon will remain with the Grove team in 2027. Unlike the agreement announced for Alex Albon, Williams described Carlos Sainz’s contract as a multi-year deal. As has become customary in Formula 1, that wording allows the team to keep the precise expiry date confidential while providing no information about any potential clauses.
Carlos Sainz may therefore have committed his future to Williams beyond 2027, when the historic British team will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The announcement also ends the recent uncertainty surrounding Carlos Sainz’s options for the 2027 season.
Carlos Sainz backs Williams with new multi-year contract
The renewal represents a significant vote of confidence in the project led by James Vowles, particularly after a 2026 season that has proved considerably more difficult than expected. The 31-year-old Spaniard joined Williams at the beginning of 2025 following four seasons with Ferrari and quickly became one of the central figures in the team’s rebuilding programme.
“I’m thrilled to announce that I will continue my journey with the Williams family,” Carlos Sainz said. “I firmly believe in the people who make up this team, both at the factory and at the track, as well as in the investment and hard work taking place behind the scenes. We have everything it takes to turn the situation around together.”
Carlos Sainz’s first season with Williams ended with results that helped the team record its strongest campaign since 2016. The highlight came in Baku, where Carlos Sainz secured his first podium for Williams by finishing third in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. That result was followed by a Sprint podium in Austin and another top-three Grand Prix finish in Qatar.
“I’m as determined as I was on day one to help Williams return to where it belongs,” Carlos Sainz continued, “and I can’t wait to create more memories with the team.”
Williams confirms Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon for 2027
Carlos Sainz’s extension arrives only 24 hours after Alex Albon’s confirmation, completing the pairing with which Williams will contest the 2027 Formula 1 World Championship. Between them, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon have competed in more than 370 Grands Prix, scored over 1,600 points and collected 31 podium finishes, making them one of the most experienced driver combinations on the grid.
“Since he arrived, Carlos’s talent behind the wheel and his dedication to the work at the factory have proved extremely valuable to this project,” James Vowles said. “He works day after day with his engineers to find every millisecond. He is a leader of this team, and I’m thrilled that he can see what will be possible as we continue our rebuilding journey.”
Williams also emphasised the contribution Carlos Sainz makes away from the circuit, an attribute James Vowles repeatedly identified as decisive when the team selected the Spaniard at the end of 2024.
“It is not only his racecraft and speed that stand out, but also the work he does behind the scenes to achieve maximum performance,” James Vowles continued. “Carlos shares our vision and ambition and works every day to make them a reality. Alongside Alex, I firmly believe we have one of the strongest line-ups on the grid and a team capable of fighting for every last drop of performance.”
Carlos Sainz shows faith despite Williams’ 2026 struggles
The new contract means Carlos Sainz will continue a journey that began in 2025 and delivered encouraging results during its first season, but has since entered a more challenging phase. Williams is currently ninth in the 2026 Constructors’ Championship, highlighting the scale of the task facing James Vowles and his drivers.
The Grove team has continued the investment and restructuring programme launched in recent years, although it has acknowledged that its planned Baku upgrade will not solve every weakness. Carlos Sainz’s decision to renew his commitment therefore represents a significant indication of his confidence in the progress Williams believes it can achieve over the coming seasons.
