The Safety Car had plenty of work to do at the Australian GP, and perhaps Lando Norris and Max Verstappen forgot what happened to some of their colleagues.
Isack Hadjar was the first victim, losing control of his car and crashing into the barriers during the formation lap. Then came Jack Doohan, followed by two veterans—Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso—with the Spaniard hitting the wall under the Safety Car.
After two days of dry running, rain arrived in Melbourne just in time for the race, making conditions significantly more challenging. The situation became even more complicated when the Grand Prix continued under the SC, despite track marshals still clearing debris, particularly after Fernando Alonso’s spin.
Concerns arose when race leader Norris found himself alongside one of the recovery trucks—a highly dangerous situation in terms of safety.
In the post-race press conference, the Grand Prix winner and Max Verstappen were asked about this issue.
“A couple of incidents today happened in parts of the circuit with little runoff,” an ABC Sport journalist asked. “In those situations, like Fernando Alonso’s crash, would you have preferred a red flag, or were you comfortable driving past the trucks and track marshals?”
“I felt comfortable,” Lando Norris responded first.
At that point, Max Verstappen agreed: “Yeah, I think it was fine. If you crash there under the Safety Car, then you’re really stupid.” The McLaren driver then added, “You shouldn’t be racing in Formula 1.”
Comments that raise some concerns, especially considering that eleven years ago, Jules Bianchi lost his life after crashing into a recovery vehicle on track.
