During the last Singapore Grand Prix, there was a lot of discussion about Max Verstappen‘s behavior during the press conference. The driver was reprimanded and sanctioned by the FIA, essentially for insulting his car. In the end, it can be summarized that way. As punishment, the three-time Formula 1 world champion will have to serve a period of community service.
The reason for this strange sentence? Many joke about it, the drivers especially, but no one can give a clear explanation. Even Max Verstappen’s teammate was quite baffled last weekend upon hearing the news: “I had sensed something, but I didn’t know exactly what the guidelines were. I didn’t know there was a rule in itself,” says Sergio Perez, according to ‘GPBlog.com.’
Most likely, the FIA decided to sanction Max Verstappen because, as a three-time world champion, they consider him a role model, especially for the younger generations entering Formula 1.
Perez: “Not all of us will follow the new FIA guidelines”
Despite the Federation’s intervention, Sergio Perez doesn’t believe this will prevent such incidents from happening in the future: “I think it’s unlikely that, in the heat of the moment, everyone will be able to follow these guidelines.” – the Mexican driver admitted.
Hence his invitation to take an example from other sports, which also sounds a bit like a provocation: “Ours is a very fun sport. Unfortunately, they’ve given us this microphone, and we have to control ourselves. Imagine what footballers might say if they also had a microphone after getting kicked in the leg. I believe that if they want to control this aspect, they should take away our radio and give us a little privacy.” – Sergio Perez concluded.
