The post-season Super Formula tests at Suzuka, held from Wednesday until today, offered a major opportunity to watch the debut of two drivers arriving from different racing categories: Kalle Rovanperä, the two-time WRC World Rally Champion, and Jack Doohan, who raced the first six Grands Prix of the 2025 Formula 1 season with Alpine before being replaced by Franco Colapinto. However, the first experience for both drivers in Japan turned out to be far from positive. While the Finnish rally star had to withdraw due to illness, the Australian driver – son of the five-time MotoGP World Champion Mick Doohan – ended up in the barriers three times in three days.
To make matters worse, Jack Doohan made the same mistake at the very same point of the Suzuka circuit on all three occasions: the Degner curve. Driving for Kondo Racing in a Toyota-powered car, he went off the track in circumstances very similar to those shown in the video below, unable to avoid crashing into the barriers.
This continues Jack Doohan’s nightmare relationship with the Japanese track. Earlier in the year, during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend, he had already suffered a violent crash at over 300 km/h at Turn 1 in FP2 while driving the Alpine, caused by a DRS system that remained open longer than it should have.
