The last race weekend in Singapore began with an almost unbelievable piece of news: Max Verstappen would have to serve community service for using curse words. Just a few hours earlier, Mohammed Ben Sulayem had stated that there would be harsher penalties for those who did not keep their language in check, aiming to make the environment more orderly and formal. And so, the Dutchman’s use of the word “fu***ng” in a press conference did not go unnoticed (understandably, the top priority of the weekend, as if there weren’t issues like flexible wings ready to ignite controversies). In response to the silly penalty, Verstappen didn’t hold back: if things continue like this, he’s ready to leave the circus.
A threat that might sound hollow to many, but not to Nico Rosberg. According to the German, it’s quite possible that, as soon as the situation worsens, the Red Bull driver might seek a break. “I think it’s right to monitor curse words because there are children watching, but asterisks work just fine. We want gladiators to be gladiators. Instead of giving him community service, it might have been better to discuss it privately and tell him not to do it again. It’s interesting to see Max’s opinion, as he has always said that he won’t be in the paddock in 5 or 10 years; maybe with the current state of his car and team, he might be happy with winning 4 World Championships in a row and take a sabbatical year, enjoying life in a different way. But at the same time, where will he go in the future?” the former Formula 1 world champion said on Sky Sport UK’s recent podcast.
