Nico Hülkenberg surprised by Gabriel Bortoleto: “He has everything to become a top F1 driver”. Nico Hülkenberg praises Sauber rookie Gabriel Bortoleto.

The German driver has been impressed by the talent of his teammate, who, in his view, possesses the qualities that can guarantee him a long and successful career in Formula 1.

Sauber’s recent progress
In the races leading up to the summer break, the Sauber Formula 1 team managed to achieve strong results with both of its drivers. The highlight was the first career podium of Nico Hülkenberg at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, a landmark achievement that confirmed the team’s step forward. Alongside that milestone came the steady growth of Gabriel Bortoleto, the reigning Formula 2 champion, who secured a sixth-place finish in Hungary. That result marked the best performance of his rookie campaign so far and underlined his rapid adaptation to the highest level of motorsport.

Nico Hülkenberg impressed
These performances did not go unnoticed in the paddock. Fernando Alonso, whose management company A14 looks after the Brazilian driver’s career, praised the youngster’s development. Even more strikingly, former Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone expressed admiration for Bortoleto and went as far as to suggest that Ferrari should consider him as a long-term replacement for Lewis Hamilton. Compliments also came from within the Sauber garage itself, with teammate Nico Hülkenberg openly admitting that he has been surprised by certain qualities shown by the 20-year-old rookie.

Speaking in an interview with Motorsport Week, Hülkenberg underlined the strengths he sees in Bortoleto, both on and off the track, which he considers essential for building a lasting and prosperous Formula 1 career. The German explained: “I think he is a very young, bright, and fast driver. He is very determined, focused, and works hard. He definitely has the right attitude and the right speed, so he has been very impressive to me, especially for a rookie. Seeing him up close as a teammate, looking at his data, and hearing what he says after practice sessions and races is very motivating. He has everything it takes to become a great driver and to build a long and successful career. To be honest, I did not know much about him before, and it has definitely been a surprise.”

Through his words, Nico Hülkenberg highlighted not only Gabriel Bortoleto’s raw pace but also his professional mindset, his approach to teamwork, and his ability to adapt quickly to the demands of Formula 1. These traits, according to the experienced German, are what set apart talented drivers from those who can truly establish themselves in the sport over the long term.
