Nico Hulkenberg believes Audi maximised everything available during qualifying for the 2026 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, securing 10th place after extracting the full potential of the car. Despite changing wind conditions making the car more difficult to manage at the Hungaroring, the German driver progressed to Q3 and earned a valuable starting position for the race.
Returning to the top 10 was a satisfying result for Nico Hulkenberg during an extremely competitive qualifying session. Although the gap to the cars ahead was slightly larger than Audi had hoped, the team executed its programme effectively when it mattered most, giving its driver an opportunity to fight for points from the fifth row of the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix starting grid.
Nico Hulkenberg maximises Audi potential in Hungary qualifying
Nico Hulkenberg expressed his satisfaction at reaching Q3 again after completing a clean qualifying session. With small margins separating several teams around the cut-off positions, avoiding mistakes and maximising every available opportunity proved essential.
“I’m happy to be back in Q3 after a clean qualifying session,” Nico Hulkenberg said. “I think we maximised everything we had available today. It is a satisfying feeling, even though the gap to the cars ahead was a little bigger than we had hoped.”
The German driver ultimately secured 10th position in a session topped by Lando Norris, who claimed pole position for McLaren. For Audi, reaching the final stage represented a positive outcome following a weekend in which the competitive order remained extremely close.
Wind complicates Audi’s search for consistency
Nico Hulkenberg explained that the wind had made it particularly difficult to find consistent handling around the Hungaroring. The problem was most noticeable through the middle sector, where the circuit’s sequence of corners places a premium on aerodynamic balance, stability and driver confidence.
“Everything has been very close throughout the weekend, and the wind made it difficult to find consistency, especially in the middle sector,” Nico Hulkenberg explained. “However, we executed well when it mattered, and starting from P10 gives us a good foundation for tomorrow.”
Qualifying inside the top 10 leaves Nico Hulkenberg well placed to defend his position and capitalise on any opportunities during the race. The narrow gaps between the midfield teams also mean that tyre management, strategy and consistent race pace could prove decisive in determining whether Audi converts its starting position into championship points.
Audi encouraged by Hungarian GP long-run pace
Nico Hulkenberg approached the race with confidence after Audi demonstrated encouraging long-run performance during Friday practice. His objective will be to remain ahead of the cars starting behind him while attempting to challenge the drivers immediately in front.
“Our long-run pace looked encouraging on Friday, so hopefully we can challenge the cars around us and fight for points,” Nico Hulkenberg said.
Starting 10th gives Audi a realistic opportunity to add to its championship total, although Nico Hulkenberg will need to withstand pressure from a tightly matched group of midfield rivals. With other teams also expressing optimism about their Hungarian Grand Prix race pace, converting Audi’s promising Friday data into consistent performance will be crucial.
A points finish would reward a qualifying session in which Nico Hulkenberg and Audi successfully managed the changing wind and maximised the car’s available performance. It could also prove important in the wider battle reflected by the latest Formula 1 driver standings.
