Formula 1 continues to move closer to MotoGP: among the new investors in Tech3 is also Pierre Gasly. The so-called Liberty Media effect is opening the two-wheeled championship to international capital and to figures coming from other areas of motorsport, in the hope that the same boom experienced by the four-wheel pinnacle of racing can be repeated.
The entry of Liberty Media as the owner of MotoGP has opened up new horizons for the future of the two-wheel series. It is therefore not surprising that several investors are beginning to look with growing interest at possible involvement in the championship.
The hope is that a surge similar to the one experienced by Formula 1 can be replicated, when Liberty Media took control of the category, expanding its commercial opportunities, modernising its storytelling, and transforming it into a truly global phenomenon capable of engaging a brand-new audience.
A significant example is the arrival of Günther Steiner at Tech3, officially confirmed towards the end of last year. His profile, so closely linked to Formula 1 in recent seasons, experienced first-hand the revolution brought about by Liberty Media. But this is not the only notable development.
The acquisition of the team by a group of international investors has also brought with it a particularly high-profile name: Pierre Gasly. The Alpine Formula 1 driver is, in fact, one of the members of Tech3’s new ownership group, alongside Bolt Ventures, Main Street Advisors, and IKON Capital.
His involvement represents a move that is both symbolic and strategic. An active Formula 1 driver choosing to invest in a MotoGP team is something that, until a few years ago, would have struggled to find fertile ground. And yet, in recent months, there has been persistent talk of potential interest from figures linked to the world of Formula 1, including rumours surrounding Lewis Hamilton, who in the past also had the opportunity to test top-class motorcycles, including one belonging to Valentino Rossi.
Gasly joins a project that aims to transform Tech3 into a more solid and structured organisation than in the past, supported by the arrival of fresh capital. His presence confirms that MotoGP is becoming an increasingly attractive platform for figures coming from Formula 1, drawn by the prospect of growth similar to that experienced by the F1 circus in recent years.
The arrival of Liberty Media is indeed setting new dynamics in motion to expand commercial opportunities, particularly in North American and Asian markets, while also attracting new investment and experimenting with innovative business models that are new to the category.
Pierre Gasly’s investment in Tech3 marks a significant cultural shift in motorsport, signaling that the “Liberty Media effect” is successfully bridging the gap between two-wheeled and four-wheeled racing fans. As MotoGP looks to replicate F1’s modern commercial success, the involvement of active stars and seasoned executives like Guenther Steiner provides the strategic expertise needed to tap into new markets. This high-profile takeover suggests that Tech3 is no longer just an independent team, but a key player in a new, globalized era of motorcycle racing where the synergy between F1 and MotoGP will likely become a defining feature of the sport’s growth.
