Alex Albon stages remarkable comeback at Monza GP
Alex Albon turned around a challenging weekend at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, rising from the back of the grid to finish in the points. After a quiet qualifying session, the Williams driver delivered a stellar Sunday performance, securing seventh place and earning the team’s only points of the weekend.
From P14 to P7: Albon’s masterclass in strategy and overtaking
Starting from P14, Alex Albon executed a strategic masterstroke by choosing white hard tyres instead of the more common yellow medium compound. This allowed him to manage three-quarters of the race on a single set, helping a Williams car that had struggled during Friday and Saturday sessions to shine when it mattered most.
Through a combination of clever strategy, precise tyre management, and calculated overtakes, Alex Albon steadily climbed the field to finish in seventh. His performance not only brought him vital points but also propelled him ahead of Kimi Antonelli in the 2025 drivers’ championship, with 70 points compared to Kimi Antonelli’s 66. This marks a huge improvement over Alex Albon’s 2024 season, when he had scored just 12 points in total.
Alex Albon praises Williams for consistent performance
The Thai driver emphasized that his Monza result demonstrates Williams’ ability to consistently score points. “It shows that we finally have a consistent car,” Alex Albon said. “That was one of our main goals last year and continues to be this year. The car is finally proving it can deliver.”
He added that even when his Saturdays are challenging, the team still manages to secure points on Sundays. “Somehow, we manage to come back into the points. I don’t know how, but I’ll keep enjoying it and pushing forward. We’ll continue to fight with Kimi until Abu Dhabi. This is all thanks to a fantastic strategy and excellent car pace.”
Strong race pace and balance
Alex Albon acknowledged that, on paper, Monza was expected to be a tough race. However, starting as the first car on hard tyres allowed him to gain an advantage once the pit stops shuffled the order. “It wasn’t an easy race, but the car was really enjoyable to drive,” he said.
Reflecting on his overall performance, he added: “It’s one of the best Sundays in terms of balance that I’ve had this year. Whenever we run with low downforce, our balance improves, and in many sections, we were as quick as the top teams. It was an incredible comeback after a difficult Saturday.”
