Mick Schumacher officially bids farewell to Mercedes and Formula 1 as the German team releases a statement confirming his departure. Mick Schumacher, currently Mercedes’ reserve driver, will vacate his role at the end of the 2024 season.
The decision appears to have been primarily Mick Schumacher’s rather than the team’s. According to the statement, the former Ferrari junior driver will explore new career opportunities, possibly in search of a regular race seat where he can step out of the shadow he’s been in during his two years with Mercedes.
Mick Schumacher’s Uncertain Future
The statement reads: “Mick, 25, joined the team at the beginning of 2023 and spent the last two years as a reserve driver. In addition to his duties in the team’s simulator, Mick also provided valuable feedback on track during various tests and races. He also competed for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship last season, securing the manufacturer’s first podium at Fuji in Japan.”
Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal, added: “Mick’s hard work, diligence, and determination in his role as a reserve driver have been vital for the team over the past two years. From his contributions in the simulator to testing various cars and being part of the team at the track, we couldn’t have asked for more from him. From day one, he integrated seamlessly into the team and became an incredibly valued colleague at Brackley.”
In his farewell remarks, Mick Schumacher, the son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, expressed gratitude for his time with the team: “I am thankful to Toto and the entire team for the experience I’ve gained over these two years. It has undoubtedly made me a more knowledgeable driver, as I’ve had the opportunity to better understand the engineering side.”
He continued: “Watching these cars race without being in the cockpit myself is tough. I want to refocus 100% on racing. I aim to fully dedicate myself to the competitive side of motorsport. In the end, racing is all you want to do as a driver; only racing gives you that feeling you love,” concluded the German driver.
