What seems almost certain is that the British driver will remain alongside Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 Formula 1 season, but doubts persist about the years beyond. The 2025 campaign marked a turning point for George Russell, widely seen as the year of his maturity. Two race victories — in Canada and Singapore — combined with consistent performances have firmly placed him among the strongest drivers on the grid. Mercedes appears to have found its new leading driver after Lewis Hamilton’s departure, and with the team’s recent progress, expectations for next season are steadily rising.
The contract signature
Formula 1 presenter Lawrence Barretto recently outlined the main factors delaying the renewal between George Russell and Mercedes. Beyond uncertainty regarding the structure of the contract itself, one of the reasons mentioned is the lingering influence of Max Verstappen — a driver personally desired by Team Principal Toto Wolff.
At the heart of the negotiation lies a fundamental disagreement. Russell reportedly wants guarantees that extend beyond 2027, rejecting the “one year plus an optional second” formula proposed by the team. Such a structure would allow Mercedes to maintain flexibility in case Max Verstappen becomes available, particularly if Red Bull struggles under the new 2026 technical regulations.
George Russell’s goal is clear: he wants a multi-year deal that secures his future with the Silver Arrows. Following the Singapore Grand Prix, Toto Wolff clarified that Verstappen is not currently part of Mercedes’ plans and that the existing driver pairing will remain in place for next season. However, questions remain about what happens after 2026. Wolff stated that discussions are now focused on final details aimed at convincing Russell to sign the renewal.
Essentially, the driver’s vision clashes with that of the team. While George Russell wants long-term security, Mercedes prefers to retain flexibility for 2027 and beyond. The team is reluctant to lock in its lineup too rigidly, wanting to keep strategic options open for future driver moves. From George Russell’s perspective, however, his recent results on track justify greater stability and recognition. He continues to take his time, hoping to reach an agreement that balances his ambitions with the team’s long-term strategy.
