Ted Kravitz stated that the German team will place more emphasis on the upcoming regulation changes rather than on this F1 season. The new Mercedes engine for the 2026 regulation change gives the same feelings as the 2014 one.
In 2014, Mercedes capitalized on the switch to hybrid V6-turbo engines to launch an unprecedented streak, which ended with eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships won by the Brackley team. However, the German brand has struggled to keep up with the ground-effect cars used since 2022. They have only secured five victories in the last three seasons.
However, it is expected that Mercedes will regain a leadership position once the new engines, which will be 50% electrified, debut in 2026.
Ted Kravitz’s Comments
Ted Kravitz – British reporter for Sky Sport – revealed that, according to internal information he gathered at Mercedes, the German team is seeing similar promises in its work for 2026 as it did in preparation for 2014.
When asked if Mercedes will focus exclusively on the imminent change rather than on 2025, the British reporter said: “I think so. They’ve lost a bit of personnel from Mercedes. They lost Loic Serra to Ferrari.” – he pointed out – “But they have the same kind of feelings about the 2026 power unit, which is so different from what we’ve seen so far, that they had with the 2014 power unit,” he added.
He then continued, stating that Mercedes team principal – Toto Wolff – and the team’s technical director – James Allison – have noticed the same improvements on the PU for the upcoming regulation change next year as they did with the last F1 regulatory shift.
Ted Kravitz explained: “As Toto Wolff and James Allison from Brixworth say, it’s rumored that they are seeing the same improvements they saw when they dominated the scene with a new power unit regulation in 2014, and that will also happen in 2026.”
“I’d be surprised if Mercedes found itself competing at the top [in F1 in 2025], even with the Mercedes name in the background. And even though a Mercedes engine won the Constructors’ Championship [with McLaren last season],” the British reporter concluded.
