Toto Wolff, team principal and CEO of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, has expressed his satisfaction with the outstanding performances of his young driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who has recently achieved his third consecutive victory.
Following his triumph at the Miami Grand Prix, the Italian driver from Bologna now leads the Formula 1 World Championship with a 20-point advantage over his teammate George Russell. This remarkable breakthrough has significantly increased both media attention and public interest surrounding the 19-year-old driver.
Wolff stressed the importance of maintaining balance amid the growing excitement around Antonelli:
“It is important at this moment that Kimi Antonelli keeps his feet on the ground. Within the team we are well aware of this, and his parents have also played a fundamental role in this regard.”
The Austrian executive also acknowledged the unique context in Italy, where attention is heavily focused on the young Mercedes driver:
“Of course, the Italian public is now fully focused on him. It is all about Sinner-Antonelli, Antonelli-Sinner; they are the two superstars, especially because the national football team did not qualify for the World Cup and I think today Sinner also won in Madrid.”
Managing pressure and external expectations
The rapid increase in visibility has naturally brought a surge of media and sponsor requests. Toto Wolff has warned about the need to carefully protect the young driver from excessive pressure:
“Of course, this puts a lot of attention on Kimi. The demands from the media and sponsors are many, and we need to put a limit on it to keep him in a safe environment.”
A key figure in Antonelli’s development is Peter Bonnington, known as “Bono”, his race engineer. Wolff highlighted his importance in the driver’s growth process:
“Bono has worked with the greatest drivers in Formula 1, from Michael Schumacher to Lewis Hamilton for many years, and now he is with Kimi. He is a good mentor for him but also a strict boss. He knows how to speak to him and Kimi listens to him a lot.”
Long-term career outlook
Mercedes intends to take a patient and long-term approach with the Italian talent. Toto Wolff explained the team’s philosophy regarding his development:
“Kimi has a formidable teammate who is extremely fast. The other competitors are catching up in terms of performance, and we want to play a long game, both in this championship and with him. He has many years of Formula 1 ahead of him, and in the next ten or fifteen years he can win many championships.”
The Mercedes team principal also warned against unrealistic expectations:
“We do not want to stumble now with these huge expectations surrounding him, because the moment he has a bad race people will say, ‘Maybe he is not the superstar we thought he was.’ We need to follow a trajectory, knowing there will be ups and downs, as is normal for a driver of his age.”
Toto Wolff concluded by reaffirming the importance of a gradual development path, emphasizing the role of the team and family support in ensuring that Antonelli’s progression is managed carefully and without unnecessary rush.
