Mercedes, a winning bet
After objectively challenging years during the ground-effect era in Formula 1, Mercedes has returned to the top of the sport and now finds a potential future champion already in-house. Of course, if there is one person not surprised by the exploits of 19-year-old Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli, it is Toto Wolff. Last season, Wolff strongly defended the decision to back the young Italian talent, filling the void—at least in terms of personality and sporting significance—left by Lewis Hamilton’s departure.
Toto Wolff and Antonelli’s title chances
Now that the Bolognese driver is leading the championship, the Mercedes team principal is naturally trying to shield his protégé from the intense media pressure that would otherwise be difficult to handle. “Now they will ask him in the press conference if he can win the championship,” Toto Wolff explained, referring to Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s current leadership in the standings, which he secured after back-to-back victories in Shanghai and Suzuka. “But they shouldn’t. He has only collected two wins so far, but there are still 19 races remaining in the season. There is plenty of time to win, but also time to lose. Kimi Antonelli must continue to do a good job.”
Looking back and staying cautious
The Mercedes team principal, of course, also takes pride in reflecting on the criticism he received last season, when it seemed that Antonelli, after a strong start to the championship—most memorably his rain-soaked masterclass in Melbourne and the impressive tyre management displayed in Suzuka—later struggled, particularly on European tracks that he knew much better. Despite this, the Austrian manager sets clear boundaries on his willingness to speculate about the internal title fight within his garage: “We will only be able to talk about the championship in Abu Dhabi, and there is still a long way to go before then. At the moment, nothing has really happened yet, and we haven’t even completed 20% of the season,” Wolff concluded, speaking about Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s leadership in the F1 World Championship.
Toto Wolff’s cautious approach therefore highlights his desire to maintain a stable environment for his young driver during a high-stakes debut season. By emphasizing the long road ahead and the mathematical reality of the 2026 calendar, the Mercedes Team Principal aims to ensure that Antonelli remains focused on lap-by-lap performance rather than the overwhelming weight of championship expectations.
