F1 Austrian GP – Mercedes: the old fox Toto Wolff
The Mercedes team principal praised George Russell’s clever thinking, helping to silence the controversy that followed the British driver’s pole-winning lap.
George Russell secured pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix, claiming his second consecutive pole after Barcelona and the 11th of his Formula 1 career. It came at the end of a dramatic Q3 session filled with tension and unexpected twists, with the Mercedes driver expertly managing a highly delicate situation after Max Verstappen’s crash, avoiding any penalty despite the yellow flags displayed on track.
The controversy behind the pole position
During the second and final runs of Q3, Max Verstappen suffered a heavy crash that immediately triggered yellow flags, particularly in the Turn 9 section of the Red Bull Ring. Under these conditions, the regulations require drivers to slow down and avoid improving their lap time, with the risk of receiving a penalty or even having their lap deleted if they fail to comply.
While Mercedes teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli chose to abandon his lap entirely as a precaution, George Russell reacted with remarkable tactical awareness. He briefly lifted off the throttle at precisely the right point and reduced his speed by only the amount required to comply with the yellow flag regulations, before continuing his lap without sacrificing unnecessary time through the remaining sectors.
Toto Wolff praises George Russell’s experience
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff openly praised his driver’s performance, highlighting George Russell’s ability to manage such a critical situation. He admitted that his initial reaction was one of concern when he saw the yellow flags and noticed Andrea Kimi Antonelli returning to the pits, even feeling frustrated that a potential opportunity might have been lost.
However, after reviewing what had happened, Toto Wolff had nothing but admiration for George Russell’s execution.
“That was all down to his experience. His lap was incredible. He lifted at exactly the right moment, by exactly the right amount, and that’s what earned him pole position.”
Toto Wolff also commented on Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s performance, describing the young Italian as the standout driver throughout most of the weekend up to that point. While expressing sympathy for the rookie’s disappointment after aborting his final lap, he added that, in his opinion, George Russell’s lap had already been shaping up to be the quicker of the two even before Max Verstappen’s accident occurred.
Ferrari remains a major threat for the race
Looking ahead to Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, Toto Wolff adopted a cautious tone when discussing Mercedes’ race pace. Despite starting from pole position, he acknowledged Ferrari’s strength in the hot conditions expected during the race.
“I’m never confident. Ferrari has been really strong in hot conditions, so we absolutely have to consider them as contenders for tomorrow,” Toto Wolff said.
Even so, the Mercedes team principal believes Andrea Kimi Antonelli showed the strongest long-run pace during practice and expressed hope that the Italian driver can fight his way back toward the front during the race.
