Fornaroli returns to a Formula 1 car: McLaren test session
Italy is currently experiencing a very strong period in motorsport, with all eyes on Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the current leader of the Formula 1 World Championship. However, behind him there are several highly promising young talents making their way through the ranks.
One of them is Leonardo Fornaroli, a driver who has achieved the remarkable feat of winning both the Formula 2 and Formula 3 titles at the first attempt. Despite this success, he has not yet secured a seat in Formula 1. Nevertheless, McLaren have taken him under their wing as a test and development driver, later promoting him to third driver for the current season.
The hope within his camp is to see the young driver from Emilia-Romagna take part in free practice sessions at some point, and the Woking-based team is actively preparing him for a possible debut during an official race weekend.
In recent days, Leonardo Fornaroli was involved in a private test with McLaren in Barcelona. His programme began with a simple out lap, followed by a push lap and then a cool-down lap. The session then progressed into meetings with the engineers and longer runs, designed to help him adapt to heavier fuel loads and tyre management under race-like conditions.
“Everything is insane. This car has incredible braking performance, I have never felt anything like it in my life. I will need time, everything is extremely fast,” the driver told his engineer at the end of the first day.
“I joined the junior programme last year, and driving a Formula 1 car now feels like a dream come true. I want to thank everyone for making this possible, I can’t wait to be back on track,” he added.
In conclusion, Fornaroli’s recent test highlights the immense skill and adaptability required to transition into the elite world of Formula 1. As he continues to refine his technique and build chemistry with the McLaren engineers, the prospect of seeing another talented Italian on the grid during a Grand Prix weekend becomes increasingly likely. This development program is a testament to the team’s commitment to nurturing champions and ensuring they are prepared for the high-pressure environment of a race weekend.
