The Mercedes Formula 1 team has entered into a partnership with the company Chestnut Carbon, with sustainability as its main objective. The Stuttgart-based company, headquartered in the United Kingdom, continues to be the most socially active team, demonstrating great attention to issues related to rights, inclusivity, and climate change. The new mission is to offset emissions through a reforestation project.
With the help of Chestnut Carbon, the goal is to recover 200 hectares of agricultural land previously used for monocultures or methane-intensive cattle grazing. The undertaken project will restore these lands, located in the United States, by planting 260,000 native trees, creating true forests rich in biodiversity.
The results of this initiative will have a significant environmental impact. There will be improvements in water and air quality. From an economic perspective, there will also be benefits for surrounding rural communities. Local experts in the field will be hired, and local personnel will be employed to ensure the project’s success.
The forecast is to remove 5,500 tons of CO2 between 2027 and 2030. This is a major step towards the ultimate goal, which is the “Race Team Against Net Zero by 2030.” Formula 1 is undergoing a shift in focus towards climate change awareness. The first changes have come from the FIA, and in the future, teams will increasingly participate. A significant transformation has already occurred with new fuels containing a higher percentage of ethanol and stricter control over their production methods.
