Lando Norris dominated the first free practice session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Friday, claiming the top spot. However, the second practice session did not go as smoothly, as he hit the wall at turn 4 midway through and was unable to return to the track for the remainder of the session.
Lando Norris now behind the others
“It was a costly incident, especially here,” the British driver explained. “Everything was going well up to that point. But I’d rather push and discover my limits than not push at all.”
He added, “So yes, it’s frustrating. I would have liked to complete a few more laps with more fuel, especially on these tires. They’re softer than last year, but it is what it is, and I’ll have to make up for it.”
The first practice session was also cut short due to a red flag, but in that case all drivers were equally affected. On the tight and twisty Baku circuit, these sessions are crucial for gathering data, testing different setups, and getting a feel for the track.
“I need to push, right? I’m up against strong drivers, so I have to take it to the limit,” Norris continued. “Obviously, now I’m behind the others, but it was a messy session, both for me and for Oscar. He seemed to struggle with the car too.” – the British driver pointed out.
Looking ahead to tomorrow
Regarding tomorrow, Lando Norris said, “We’ll see what we can do. Ferrari will be fast, and Red Bull too. They’re never strong on Friday, but then they wake up and become quick. I expect to be racing at least three other cars tomorrow.” – the McLaren driver concluded.
Lando Norris believes the field will be tightly packed in qualifying and that the battle for pole position is wide open. So far, free practice hasn’t provided any clear answers, leaving fans and teams alike waiting to see how the real challenge will unfold.
