Mercedes 2026 F1 project: chassis improvements essential to surpass rivals. Mercedes aims to dominate in 2026 but must bridge the chassis gap.

Mercedes W15, 2024 F1 car

Mercedes aims to dominate in 2026 but must bridge the chassis gap. Having a superior power unit like the one from 2014 (if it’s even possible to produce) might not be sufficient this time.

It’s perhaps due to a logical-historical association that many believe Mercedes could have the best power unit on the grid in 2026. This belief stems from what happened in 2014, at the dawn of the turbo-hybrid power unit era. The Three-Pointed Star reaped the benefits of a technical advantage, having started development earlier than its rivals. This led to eight years of dominance with 15 titles split between drivers and constructors.

History, however, doesn’t easily repeat itself, especially when the conditions essential for that cycle of victories no longer exist. Ahead of the 2026 regulation changes, Mercedes does not have an early start over its competitors, who are now more competitive than ever and possess the expertise needed to challenge the best.

Furthermore, the High Performance Powertrains division in Brixworth no longer has Andy Cowell, who is now a valuable asset for Aston Martin, a team ready to integrate Honda’s V6 engines, which have consistently challenged and defeated Mercedes in recent championships.

Toto Wolff, team principal and co-owner of the Anglo-German outfit, is well aware of this and has dismissed claims that the engine under development in the UK is already outperforming the competition. These are merely journalistic speculations unsupported by facts.

Mercedes 2026: chassis improvements essential to surpass rivals
Even assuming for a moment that Mercedes’ V6 becomes the benchmark in the new Formula 1 era, there remains another hurdle to overcome. Wolff has warned that things won’t be as straightforward as in 2014. This is evident from the 2024 season, where a Mercedes engine triumphed in a non-Mercedes car, highlighting the need for advancements in aerodynamics and chassis development.

In 2014, Mercedes supplied engines to McLaren, Williams, and Force India, none of which could build a chassis on par with the works team. This confirms that during that technical revolution, the Three-Pointed Star leveraged not only its engine advantage but also created a highly efficient package that outclassed both external and internal competitors.

When asked about his main concern for the upcoming Formula 1 era starting next year, Wolff spoke of few worries but significant motivation for what he called “a super interesting challenge.”

“You need to do your job as best as possible at all levels. A good engine alone won’t get us anywhere,” the 53-year-old Viennese told AMuS. “Even McLaren will have that engine. Then we need to beat them on the chassis. There’s nowhere to hide.”

In short, Wolff is tempering expectations, emphasizing that the context has changed dramatically over the past decade and that the 2014 models cannot simply be applied to the current situation. Mercedes has significant work to do to close the gap that has emerged during these years of Venturi-effect F1. The new regulatory framework might help, but it won’t automatically place Brackley back on top of the world.

Moreover, there’s still a championship to contest before 2026, and Mercedes does not view it as a mere transitional phase. Performance convergence fuels hope. The Three-Pointed Star is determined to prove it has weathered the departure of Lewis Hamilton and can win even without the most decorated driver in history.
