F1 | Mercedes at a crossroads: no one to study, yet development must continue
Mercedes’ dominant start to the new Formula 1 technical era is not enough to erase all doubts. According to former Force India and Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer, the very advantage enjoyed by the Brackley-based team could also become a potential weakness, as rival teams now have a clear reference point to analyze and chase more effectively.
“A significant difference for Mercedes is that others can look at Mercedes and say: ‘Aha! That’s what they did to reach this level’. Mercedes can’t look at anyone and say: ‘Aha! What do I do next?’. They will have to think creatively about what comes next to go faster, while the others can copy and close the gap more quickly.”
This dynamic, often seen in Formula 1 cycles, places the leading team in a uniquely challenging position. While rivals benefit from observing and reverse-engineering successful concepts, the frontrunner must rely entirely on internal innovation, with no external benchmarks to guide development.
“The other teams that aren’t there yet learn from Mercedes or Ferrari. That’s what Adrian Newey does when he walks along the grid: he looks at every car, learns, and shortens development time,” Szafnauer added. “Mercedes is alone out there, and in 18 months it will be much faster. But it has no one to study. Looking at others helps, but it’s a harder job.”
In this context, Mercedes’ challenge becomes not just maintaining its current advantage, but continuing to evolve without the benefit of external inspiration. A position of strength, certainly — but also one that demands constant creativity, precision, and the ability to anticipate the next step before anyone else does.
While Mercedes currently enjoys a comfortable margin at the top of the standings, Szafnauer’s insights remind us that the hunter often has a clearer target than the hunted. As the 2026 season progresses, the technical battle will shift from discovery to refinement. Whether Mercedes can maintain its “creative thinking” and stay ahead of a field that is undoubtedly analyzing every inch of the W17 will be the defining story of the next year and a half.
