The 2025 Mercedes will continue to feature a black livery, as requested by Lewis Hamilton a few seasons ago, according to Toto Wolff. The Mercedes team principal specified that the livery’s color will not change, even though the seven-time world champion will no longer be driving for the German team.
The story of Mercedes’ black livery is closely tied to Hamilton. The Brackley-based team, previously known as the “Silver Arrows,” traditionally used silver liveries. However, in 2020, Hamilton requested a switch to black for a “noble” cause.
The new Ferrari driver, long associated with the “Black Lives Matter” movement, has been an advocate for social issues. As a staunch supporter of initiatives to combat racism and gender inequality, Lewis Hamilton brought these critical topics to the forefront in the paddock, often drawing criticism from the FIA and others.
The 2025 Mercedes Livery Will Be a Tribute to Its Former Champion
Mercedes, however, has always stood by Lewis Hamilton, going as far as changing its livery color to support him. “The black livery is something Hamilton brought to Mercedes. For this reason, it’s right to keep it unchanged,” said Toto Wolff.
The Brackley team principal also acknowledged that the black livery gave the Mercedes a sleeker, almost supercar-like appearance. “When they called to confirm that the Mercedes would be black, as I had requested, I was with my father. I couldn’t believe it. A wonderful feeling washed over me,” Hamilton once shared.
In short, although the Briton has chosen to join Ferrari, Mercedes’ affection for him remains unchanged. Above all, Hamilton’s contributions to the German team continue to be recognized, with this livery serving as a fitting tribute to their former champion.
