McLaren team principal clarifies pit stop controversy: no attempt to hide car components. Andrea Stella clarifies McLaren’s asymmetric pit stop at Imola 2025.

Lando Norris, McLaren 2025 F1

During the 2025 Imola GP weekend, an unusual detail caught the attention of fans and insiders: in one of McLaren’s pit stops, the front tyres on the MCL39 were changed before the rear ones. This anomaly sparked speculation in the paddock, especially concerning whether it was a tactic to shield the rear brake components from rival scrutiny. Andrea Stella, Team Principal of the Woking-based team, stepped in to clarify the matter.

Asymmetric pit stop at McLaren? No hidden agenda
Stella firmly dismissed any theory suggesting a deliberate strategy to hide or protect sensitive parts of the car, such as the rear brake system.

“No, there was no ulterior motive,” the Italian manager explained. “The pit stop was simply managed that way due to internal operational dynamics. We didn’t hide anything, and there was no technical need related to the brakes.”

Photos, transparency and the FIA: the technical reality in F1
Andrea Stella also took the opportunity to explain how technical transparency is a fundamental part of today’s Formula 1 paddock. Every team meticulously documents its rivals’ cars, and the FIA has access to all relevant data.

“In Formula 1, we all photograph each other,” he stressed. “We have detailed images of our competitors and they have them of our cars. The International Federation has access to every piece of technical information. There would be no reason to try and hide anything.”

In short, what happened in the McLaren garage was simply an isolated operational episode with no significant technical implications. It’s a reminder of how closely details are scrutinised in F1, but that not every variation necessarily signals secrecy or technical innovation.
