These first seven Grands Prix of the 2025 season have been fantastic for Williams. From Melbourne to Imola, the team from Grove has scored 51 points—a chasm behind the top four, but a “comfortable” gap over the chasing pack. Of those, a remarkable 40 have been delivered by Alexander Albon, who once again showed what he’s made of at Imola. Despite everything, the Thai driver leaves Italy with a bitter taste.
2025 has been a sensational year for Alexander Albon. So far, only one Grand Prix—Bahrain—saw him finish outside the points. In the remaining six, he has consistently landed in the top 10, with three top-five finishes. The car, now arguably “the best of the rest,” seems to be the product of an excellent design, and both Alexander Albon and the team have capitalized on every opportunity.
In Australia, for instance, despite challenging conditions, perfectly timed pit stops brought him just behind Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes, while in Miami, by taking advantage of the Virtual Safety Car, he once again outperformed his teammate. That trend continued yesterday in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.
Only his impatience in the final stages, which led him off track during the battle with Charles Leclerc, “ruined” an otherwise flawless weekend. Alexander Albon himself admitted as much in post-race interviews, not hiding some disappointment. “It was a strange race today, right? In a normal race, without too many disruptions, we were fighting for third or fourth place.”
“I admit we were a bit lucky with the VSC, but at the same time, we were unlucky with the final Safety Car. I’ve scored two fifth places in a row, but still, today I’m a bit disappointed,” Alexander Albon continued. “In the fight with Leclerc, I could have done something differently, avoided that move at Tamburello.”
“Obviously, I couldn’t have held off Lewis, but at that moment, if there hadn’t been the fight with Charles, I thought I could’ve caught Oscar Piastri too. Our pace, on fresh tyres, was much better than his.” He concluded with a look toward the upcoming Grands Prix: “Maybe we’ll do well in Monaco too, but I think we’ll really struggle in Barcelona.”
