Oscar Piastri, who currently sits at the top of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship standings, has revealed the series of changes and improvements that have allowed him to turn the balance of power inside the McLaren Formula 1 team and put teammate Lando Norris under sustained pressure in their internal rivalry.
The young Australian driver, now leading the championship with a nine-point advantage, has impressed both fans and paddock insiders with his steady and determined progression. He has displayed a newfound ability to challenge and at times outperform Norris, turning what began as a typical intra-team rivalry into an intense head-to-head battle for the sport’s most prestigious prize. For McLaren, this season has become a stage where every detail matters in the fight for the championship crown.
Oscar Piastri’s method for becoming a genuine title contender
After two seasons in which Lando Norris appeared to have the upper hand, Oscar Piastri has managed to change the narrative in 2025. The qualifying duel between the two McLaren drivers is currently perfectly balanced, standing at seven-all after 14 Grands Prix. In race results, however, the advantage tilts slightly towards Piastri, who has secured six victories compared to Norris’s five.
The secret behind this shift, according to the Australian driver, is not a single breakthrough but rather a collection of small, incremental improvements in many different areas. Piastri explained that in 2024 he had enjoyed several very strong weekends where he felt capable of winning races, but these were mixed with average performances and occasionally poor results. In contrast, the 2025 season has brought far more consistently positive weekends.
He pointed out that there has not been one specific area of focus, but rather a transformation into a more complete and well-rounded driver. This has been part of his overall strategy to fight for the World Championship. The key difference, he noted, has been his ability to get closer to what he believes is his true potential as a racing driver and to translate that into performance on track more often.
Piastri highlighted that applying his ideal driving approach more consistently has been a decisive factor. Instead of relying on sporadic flashes of brilliance, he has worked on a methodical approach to maximise performance in all conditions. This holistic improvement, therefore, is not the result of a single stroke of genius, but of careful, structured work across multiple fronts: mental preparation, pressure management, and the ability to adapt quickly to a variety of race circumstances.
In a season where the margins between success and failure are so narrow, every qualifying session and every race strategy takes on heightened importance. Piastri seems to have found the formula to remain consistently competitive from Friday practice through to the chequered flag on Sunday. This evolution has not only allowed him to match a teammate of Norris’s calibre but also to lead the fight for the championship at the highest level of motorsport.
