Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri enter the critical second half of the 2025 Formula 1 season separated by a mere nine points, setting the stage for an intense battle for the championship. After the summer break, any previous momentum or form is expected to reset, as the McLaren drivers face a demanding 10-race sprint to claim the title.
In the run-up to the break, Norris secured three wins in the last four races, while Piastri remained a persistent challenger, closely trailing his teammate throughout. Both drivers are currently performing at the peak of their abilities, which bodes well for McLaren as they prepare for the major regulatory changes coming in 2026. Despite this strong showing, the team will still need to navigate competition from Ferrari and Mercedes during the remainder of the season.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has expressed his approval of Norris’s progress, particularly praising his ability to silence critics by demonstrating greater consistency on race Sundays and converting pole positions into victories more frequently. Midway through the season, the engineering team at McLaren has observed a noticeable shift in intensity and focus from both Norris and Piastri, signaling a growing hunger to outperform each other.
Following the Hungarian Grand Prix, McLaren’s management conveyed their excitement about the way both Norris and Piastri handled their intra-team rivalry on the track. So far, their competition has been relatively clean, with the exception of a costly collision in Montreal caused by a misjudgment that impacted Norris’s points tally. Without that incident, Norris would currently be leading the drivers’ championship.
Looking ahead, Italian journalist Leo Turrini, speaking on Sky Sport Italia, forecasts that the intensity between the McLaren drivers will escalate dramatically starting with the Dutch Grand Prix, predicting they will be ready to “tear each other apart” in their fight for the 2025 title. While this prospect may worry McLaren and its supporters, it promises an electrifying conclusion to the championship, potentially the most captivating since the 2021 season finale.
After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Andrea Stella, McLaren’s team principal, refrained from criticizing Oscar Piastri despite a tense moment on lap 69 of 70, when the Australian driver’s aggressive move nearly resulted in disaster. Piastri locked up both front tires during the maneuver, leaving Norris on edge, yet Stella appeared content that the drivers avoided a collision and maintained composure.
As the season progresses, McLaren could secure the constructors’ championship as early as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, potentially clinching the title for the second consecutive year. Once the team title is locked in, the rivalry between Norris and Piastri is expected to intensify, with the drivers likely to push each other to the limit during the final eight races of the season.
