According to a former Formula 1 driver, the possibility of Max Verstappen moving to Mercedes became evident as early as the incident that occurred in Austria involving Kimi Antonelli. The reaction shown by the Dutch superstar during the Austrian Grand Prix at Spielberg surprised many fans and analysts alike. This is because the Max Verstappen we are accustomed to seeing on the track would have behaved very differently after a collision like the one that happened at the start of the Austrian Grand Prix with the Mercedes driven by Kimi Antonelli.
Instead, the four-time World Champion appeared almost indifferent to what had just occurred. There was no aggressive reaction or signs of frustration, other than calmly approaching the young Italian talent to ask for an explanation about the incident that took place moments earlier. Was this a sign of maturity, or perhaps an early indication of their future as teammates? Considering recent rumors suggesting that Max Verstappen is on the verge of joining the team managed by Toto Wolff, it is plausible to think more about the second possibility.
For some, it was already clear from Sunday
This perspective was also confirmed by former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya, who spoke to BettingLounge.co.uk about the events during the last race weekend. Montoya questioned, “Why was Max so kind to Kimi Antonelli after the crash? Maybe they are already teammates. If we analyze what happened, Kimi braked too late, which caused his wheels to lock up. Then, trying to minimize damage, he avoided Daniel Lawson but ended up colliding with Max. I believe that if a similar incident had a significant impact on the World Championship, Max Verstappen would have been furious. But in this case, he empathized with Antonelli. Kimi’s weekend had been difficult up to that point, and he probably just wanted the race to be over,” explained the former driver.
