The Verstappen factor: more than 50% of wins in cars that didn’t win the Constructors’ Championship
Max Verstappen has secured 35 victories out of 69 in Formula 1 driving cars that did not finish first in the Constructors’ Championship at the end of the year, highlighting his exceptional talent and consistency even when his machinery was not the fastest on the grid.
Verstappen challenges McLaren
Max Verstappen has remarkably reduced his deficit to Lando Norris to just 24 points with two weekends still remaining in the season. A gap that few expected back in the Bahrain tests, when McLaren’s dominance was evident, continued for most of the season, and then resurfaced sporadically during the American rounds.
This comeback emphasizes the reigning world champion’s outstanding qualities: mental toughness, consistent performance, and the ability to capitalize on every opportunity, even when competing against more competitive cars. One statistic perfectly illustrates this: out of his 69 Formula 1 wins, the Las Vegas victory marked his 35th in a car that did not secure the Constructors’ title at the end of the year (already mathematically won by McLaren in 2025).
A historic record
With potentially another decade of high-level racing ahead, Verstappen already leads this particular ranking. Michael Schumacher is second with 32, followed by Lewis Hamilton (25), Alain Prost (21), and Sebastian Vettel (19). This impressive figure is partly explained by Red Bull’s tendency to design cars around the Dutch driver, but it also reflects his talent. Before Red Bull began its winning era, Verstappen had already achieved 10 F1 wins by 2020, all during the Mercedes-dominated period, and he was just 23 years old at the time.
Elite company
Finally, when considering drivers with at least 20 career Grand Prix wins, Max Verstappen is among the few who achieved over 50% of their victories in cars that were at most second in the Constructors’ Championship. He is in elite company alongside Fernando Alonso (18 out of 32), Jackie Stewart (15 out of 27), Nelson Piquet (16 out of 23), Kimi Räikkönen (13 out of 21), and Mika Häkkinen (12 out of 20).
Twenty-four points. Two races. A driver who has made a career out of beating the odds. The 2025 Formula 1 championship is far from over.
