Max Verstappen’s final Dutch GP ends in huge opening-lap Zandvoort crash

Max Verstappen, Red Bull RB22, 2026 F1

Max Verstappen’s final Dutch Grand Prix ended in the worst possible way as the Red Bull driver suffered a huge crash before completing the opening lap at Zandvoort. The four-time Formula 1 world champion lost control of his RB22 exiting the final banked corner, hit the barriers heavily and triggered an immediate red flag, although he fortunately confirmed over the radio that he was okay.

It was a painful conclusion to Max Verstappen’s final home Grand Prix at a circuit where his record had previously been exceptional. Across his first five Formula 1 appearances at Zandvoort, the Dutchman had recorded three victories and two second places. His farewell to the Zandvoort fans, however, lasted less than a single racing lap.

Max Verstappen crashes heavily at Zandvoort’s final corner

The accident happened at the end of the opening lap as Max Verstappen accelerated out of the final banked corner leading onto Zandvoort’s short main straight. The Red Bull suddenly broke away from him and the Dutch driver was unable to recover control.

Replays appeared to point towards a mistake from Verstappen, who went too far to the inside on the damp circuit before the RB22 snapped away unexpectedly. Once the car started sliding, there was little he could do to prevent the impact.

The Red Bull slammed into the outside barrier before rebounding dangerously back across the circuit towards the inside. Fortunately, none of the cars approaching behind struck Verstappen’s damaged RB22 as it crossed the track.

Race control immediately displayed the red flag, bringing the Dutch Grand Prix to a halt while the damaged car and debris were removed.

Gabriel Bortoleto also spins in slippery Zandvoort conditions

Max Verstappen was not the only driver to be caught out by the difficult conditions in that section of the circuit. Further back, Gabriel Bortoleto also lost control of his Audi in the same area.

The Brazilian was both skilful and fortunate enough to avoid an accident, completing a full 360-degree spin before recovering and continuing.

The incidents underlined the limited grip available on parts of the circuit after rain had left the surface damp. Unsettled conditions had remained a possibility throughout the weekend, with the Zandvoort weather forecast repeatedly placing changing conditions among the major variables facing the teams.

Verstappen confirms he is okay after huge RB22 impact

The most important news came immediately after the accident. Max Verstappen quickly told Red Bull over the radio that he was okay and was able to climb out of the wrecked car without assistance.

The Red Bull driver nevertheless appeared understandably sore and shaken after such a heavy impact.

For Verstappen, the retirement brought a particularly bitter end to an extraordinary run at his home circuit. After three victories and two runner-up finishes in his previous five Zandvoort Grands Prix, his final Dutch GP was over almost as soon as it had begun.
