Max Verstappen has raced and won in a category very different from Formula 1. Last weekend, he competed in the 4 Hours of Nürburgring, driving a Ferrari 296 GT3, and secured victory alongside his teammate Chris Lulham.
These events outside of F1 have sparked much discussion: some support Max, while others see it as a potential distraction.
Max’s talent summed up in one sentence: “Impressed, but not surprised”
Helmut Marko, Red Bull advisor, sided with Max Verstappen’s supporters, saying, “Max is simply a passionate driver who seizes every opportunity. It’s just his style. In my day, I used to drive everything too.”
“It’s incredible how Max pulled it off. Just the start and the first corner—the way he overtook the two cars ahead—was classic Verstappen. No one else can do it,” the 82-year-old continued.
Indeed, Max’s competitive debut in the category was truly “incredible,” as the Dutchman built more than a minute of advantage over the rest of the field, paving the way for Lulham for the remainder of the race.
Marko described himself as “impressed, but not surprised,” then joked, “He gave a minute to the second-place driver. He does the same in Formula 1.”
Max’s next target is the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, and he has also expressed interest in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, provided his teammate is his father, Jos Verstappen.
“Jos is in great shape for rally races. He’s very fast there. I can very well imagine him teaming up with Max when he retires from Formula 1…if the F1 schedule allows it,” Marko concluded.
