F1 | Max already knew about McLaren’s Las Vegas disqualification: Jos Verstappen reveals
Max Verstappen reportedly knew in advance about the double disqualification that McLaren received at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The penalty against McLaren has significantly reopened the fight for the world championship, a battle in which Max Verstappen plays a crucial role. Thanks to his victory in Sin City and the double-zero result for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, the Dutch Red Bull driver now finds himself only twenty-four points behind the British driver.
With just two races and one Sprint remaining in the 2025 season, this gap is challenging but certainly not impossible to overcome. However, it should be noted that the final two circuits of the season are, on paper, more favorable to the McLaren MCL39 than to the Red Bull RB21.
Will this be enough to stop Verstappen from chasing his fifth consecutive world title? Clearly not. Max will do everything he can to achieve what would be a historic result, especially given the current performance difference between the two cars.
Max already knew about the double disqualification
Looking back at what happened in Las Vegas, some statements from Jos Verstappen caused quite a stir among insiders. The former driver revealed that his son already knew what the FIA’s decision would be at the end of the Sin City race. “The pressure is now entirely on McLaren, and they will surely feel it. Max can even win all the remaining races, but it might not be enough to secure the championship. And then there’s also Oscar Piastri, who can’t be happy about the situation. You can clearly see that the two cars are different, one slides and the other doesn’t,” Jos Verstappen stated.
“Moreover, the Vegas mistake was really significant. It could have been an error or a necessary step to make the car perform. I had spoken with Max, and he already knew about the double disqualification. For him, it will be an exciting end to the season, even though not everything is in his hands. He has nothing to lose and will attack until the very end,” he added.
Whether Max received the information officially or through the F1 grapevine remains unclear, but Jos’s comments guarantee the title fight will stay red-hot heading into the Lusail weekend.
