Max Verstappen has always had a hot temper. Since his debut in F1, we’ve seen a determined driver who has never hesitated to attack—sometimes even aggressively—his rivals. This attitude has helped shape him into the champion he is today but also earned him a reputation for being hot-headed. This tendency is reflected in the many penalties he has collected over his career, especially since he returned to fighting for victory without being able to dominate every race. Max is truly on the edge. He has racked up a total of 11 penalty points on his license—just one shy of the 12-point threshold that triggers a race ban, forcing him to sit out one Grand Prix. Now Verstappen must be extremely cautious and avoid doing anything that could cost him a suspension from F1 for a race, particularly as the next event is the Austrian GP, Red Bull’s home race. A warning has now come from the GPDA president.
The words of the GPDA president
The president of the drivers’ association, Alex Wurz, warned Max about his current situation and how he must not make it worse in Montreal. “I haven’t even considered the idea (of Max being absent in Austria, ed.),” he said. “I hope it’s a boring race because of Max. I think he’s smart enough to calculate when and how to defend. Max is an intelligent guy and knows how to manage a challenge like this. Max can’t miss Spielberg.”
For Verstappen, it will be quite a challenge to defend and fight in a race he may not be able to dominate, but that he’ll surely try to win. Could another Max Verstappen masterclass be on the way? We’ll see. In the meantime, the cold weather in Montreal could indicate a much closer race than recent McLaren performances might suggest—and the “Cannibal” Max Verstappen can already smell the blood of his rivals. Let’s see what kind of race it will be.
