Max Verstappen and Red Bull finally secured their first podium finish of the 2026 Formula 1 season in Canada, although the four-time world champion was fully aware that circumstances elsewhere in the race played a major role in opening the door to a top-three result.
The Dutch driver crossed the line in the top three at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, delivering a welcome result for Red Bull in what has so far been a challenging campaign. However, Max Verstappen was quick to acknowledge that some rivals effectively took themselves out of contention or were struck by misfortune during the Canadian Grand Prix.
“I’m smiling because it’s a nice podium,” Max Verstappen told Sky. “I had a great battle with Lewis Hamilton, and I’m happy for Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s victory.”
While pleased with the result, the Red Bull driver was realistic about how the race unfolded and admitted that luck played its part in helping Red Bull secure its breakthrough podium of the season.
“We had a bit of luck with the chaos at McLaren and with the problem that stopped George Russell,” Max Verstappen added. “But we were ready to take advantage of the opportunity when it came, and I’m happy for the team to have secured this podium.”
Max Verstappen’s hard-fought third-place finish at the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix highlights his elite ability to maximize performance opportunities when facing a changing competitive order. By executing a flawless race stint and capitalizing on the operational errors of McLaren and the sudden mechanical retirement of Mercedes’ George Russell, the Red Bull champion secured a crucial psychological and technical boost for his team. As the development race moves toward the European leg, refining tire thermal windows and extracting more long-run stability will be the absolute focus for the engineering department. Ultimately, if the technical office can continually deliver a reliable and aerodynamically compliant package to back up Verstappen’s clinical racing intelligence, Red Bull will remain a persistent, dangerous threat to the frontrunners throughout the remainder of the season.
