Andrea Kimi Antonelli reacts after Canada win as George Russell retirement changes Mercedes battle. Andrea Kimi Antonelli claims fourth consecutive win after dramatic Mercedes duel in Canada.

Kimi Antonelli, 2024

Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured the fourth Formula 1 victory of his career in Canada, making it four consecutive wins after a race that unfolded in two very different phases for the young Mercedes driver.

During the opening 30 laps, the Bologna-born driver was locked in an intense battle with team-mate George Russell. After a strong launch that allowed Andrea Kimi Antonelli to initially get ahead of George Russell, the two Mercedes drivers repeatedly traded positions, especially after Lando Norris—who had taken the lead after the start—made his pit stop.

Then, on lap 30, George Russell was forced to retire due to a battery issue on his Mercedes W17, completely changing the complexion of the race for Andrea Kimi Antonelli. From that point onward, the Italian’s challenge became one of management rather than direct combat. He had to carefully look after every aspect of the car, from the mechanical components to tyre preservation, with the clear goal of keeping both the tyres performing and the W17 reliable after seeing what had happened to his team-mate.

“It was a really enjoyable battle with George, if I’m being honest,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli said. “We were basically right on the limit, and today wasn’t easy. There were strong gusts of wind coming through, especially at Turn 10. That section was very tricky. He ran wide there and I managed to get past him, then I did the same and he got back ahead.”

“In the end, it’s a shame for him to have had that failure which forced him to retire, because it would have been a great battle between us. But I’ll take this result, another victory. I’m very happy, and congratulations to the team.”

Once he found himself running alone at the front, Andrea Kimi Antonelli had to shift focus toward tyre management, particularly after noticing early signs of degradation.

“When I was on my own, I tried to manage the tyres because I started to get graining on the front left. It was a strange feeling because I wasn’t actually pushing that hard. Then, once I managed to bring the tyres back into the right temperature window, I showed that I had strong pace. Now I’m already looking ahead to the next race.”

For Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the championship now enters a different phase. His advantage over George Russell is now approaching 50 points, but with a long Formula 1 season still ahead, the Mercedes driver remains fully aware that nothing has been decided.

Monaco is next on the calendar, and Mercedes may not arrive as the outright favourite on a very different type of circuit.

“The goal for the next races is to keep doing what we’ve been doing,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli explained. “Obviously, we’ll continue raising the bar, because George was incredibly quick this weekend, and that means I’ll need to keep improving my own level as well.”

“On top of that, our rivals—Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren—are pushing hard behind us and continuing to improve. Monaco is next, and that could be a complicated race for us, but we’ll try to be ready for every possible situation.”
