Verstappen and the missed victory at the Ring: “Frustrating, but these things happen”
Max Verstappen came painfully close to victory in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, only for a late technical failure to cruelly end the hopes of the #3 Mercedes crew.
A technical failure ends a winning charge
Max Verstappen, Daniel Juncadella, Lucas Auer and Jules Gounon appeared to be firmly on course for victory in the iconic endurance race when disaster struck. The #3 Mercedes suffered a driveshaft failure while Daniel Juncadella was behind the wheel, abruptly ending what had looked like a near-perfect run.
Reacting on Instagram, Max Verstappen admitted the ending was both frustrating and unfortunate.
“A really unlucky and frustrating ending, but these things can happen. I still had a lot of fun together with my teammates. Thanks to the team and to everyone who came to the track to support us.”
Jules Gounon shares emotional reaction
Jules Gounon also took to social media to express his disappointment after the heartbreaking result.
“The word ‘devastated’ probably doesn’t even come close to describing how we feel right now,” Jules Gounon wrote.
“We were doing everything perfectly, but the Green Hell had other plans. It’s incredible how this sport can give you the highest emotions and then, a moment later, make you feel like you’re three metres underground.
In the end, a problem with three hours to go took victory away from us. A huge thank you to the whole team for the incredible work and commitment. I need a bit of time to process this disappointment.”
The cruel retirement of the #3 Mercedes therefore highlights the brutal unpredictability of endurance racing at the legendary Nurburgring. Despite the crushing disappointment of a technical failure halting their dominant charge, Max Verstappen and his stellar crew proved their immense competitive pace, leaving the Green Hell with their heads held high and a shared desire to conquer the grueling event in the future.
