Max Verstappen penalized in F1 Brazil Grand Prix: Red Bull star to begin from pit lane. Max Verstappen will start the 2025 Brazilian GP from the pit lane after Red Bull makes major car changes.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull RB21, 2025 F1

Max Verstappen will have to start from the pit lane for the Brazilian Grand Prix, as Red Bull has decided to implement significant changes to his car. These updates triggered the penalty, although they do not dramatically alter the starting grid, since Verstappen was originally set to start in 16th place. Starting from the pit lane also reduces the risk of incidents in the first corner.

A challenging comeback for the reigning champion

The reigning world champion will face a tough climb through the field, although championship hopes have effectively faded. Last year, Max Verstappen famously won at Interlagos starting from 17th on the grid, aided by a wet race that helped him make significant gains. Under normal dry conditions, making a similar comeback will be much more difficult.

Key changes to the Red Bull car

Red Bull has faced a weekend of struggles in Brazil. Both cars were eliminated in Q1 during qualifying, with drivers reporting a lack of grip in all conditions and difficulty controlling the car. The team is hoping that the latest modifications will improve performance during the race.

Taking advantage of the penalty and his pit lane start, Red Bull has upgraded Verstappen’s power unit and made significant adjustments to the car’s setup to try to correct the lack of performance seen throughout the weekend. All eyes will be on Verstappen’s attempt to climb through the field during the Brazilian GP.

Team dynamics and championship implications

Yuki Tsunoda, Max Verstappen’s teammate, is expected to start in his originally assigned 19th position unless further updates occur. McLaren drivers, meanwhile, benefit from one less competitor threatening their race or championship points. This presents a prime opportunity for Lando Norris to make a significant gain in the standings.

Max Verstappen’s pit lane start guarantees that the Brazilian GP will feature exciting overtaking and strategy battles, while Ferrari and McLaren look to capitalize on Red Bull’s misfortune. The 2025 race at Interlagos could once again prove decisive for the remaining championship points.
