Kimi Antonelli on his Mercedes evolution: “I give the team feedback, and they listen”. Kimi Antonelli reflects on his debut F1 season with Mercedes.

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes, 2025 F1

Kimi Antonelli is celebrating not only his technical development but also his growth in personality and leadership within Mercedes. The young Italian rookie has quickly shown that he can handle the pressures of Formula 1, earning respect from his team.

Antonelli’s rookie journey: highs and lows

With Kimi Antonelli’s debut, Italy has returned to the spotlight in Formula 1. The Bologna-born driver had the honor of substituting for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, learning the intricacies of the sport alongside George Russell. Many expected the leap from Formula 2 to F1 to be a harsh adjustment, yet the #12 impressed immediately by finishing in the top five at Melbourne following a remarkable comeback. This result amplified attention on the 2006-born driver.

However, the European season proved challenging, as Kimi Antonelli struggled under pressure and faced technical setbacks, such as issues with the new rear suspension. After Spa-Francorchamps, he even questioned his own abilities. Despite this, he found the strength to push back, assert his opinions to the team, and regain confidence. This collaboration led to a strong season finale, highlighted by a podium finish in Interlagos. Kimi Antonelli expressed gratitude to the team for adapting to his feedback and showing the humility to revisit technical decisions, boosting his confidence for 2026.

Antonelli’s words

“Driving for a top-level team means being under intense scrutiny; every small mistake is magnified. During the difficult moments, it was tough. But the team never stopped supporting me, and together we managed to overcome that phase,” Antonelli said.

“Now, thanks to the experience I’m gaining, I can communicate my car-related needs to the team. They listen to me and provide support,” he added. “We are building momentum, and my relationship with George is excellent. We’ve worked really well together, and that’s why I can’t wait for the next season to start.”

Ultimately, Kimi Antonelli’s journey from a hesitant rookie to a confident technical contributor shows a maturity that matches his raw speed. By establishing a clear line of communication with his engineers, he has ensured that Mercedes is now moving in a direction that suits his driving style as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
