Max Verstappen defends himself
Max Verstappen arrived at the Interlagos circuit in view of the Brazilian Grand Prix with a comfortable 47-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship. This gap gives him peace of mind and the assurance of remaining the championship leader at least until Las Vegas. However, the three-time Formula 1 world champion sees challenges all around: McLaren is undeniably strong, and Lando Norris could close the gap further in Brazil. Meanwhile, the FIA is looking to change the rules on racing duels, potentially limiting the defensive techniques Max Verstappen used controversially in the United States Grand Prix at the Austin circuit.
Max Verstappen’s comments
The #1 driver responded in his own style: “My way of racing? I’ve heard these things before in my career; it’s my tenth year in Formula 1, and I believe I know what I’m doing,” he said at the Interlagos press conference. “The fight with Norris is great, like the one in 2021. All rivalries motivate you to give your best on track. Changing the rules? I never feel like it’s me against everyone, on or off the track.” Max Verstappen may find an ally in Ferrari, whose recent improvements could take crucial points away from Norris: “It can be positive or negative for a driver when there are more teams in the battle. For the show, it’s definitely a plus.” – he pointed out.
The three-time Formula 1 champion also commented on his challenges in Mexico City: “Missing the Friday session didn’t help, but we learned more about the tires and hope to improve. Each track has been different, and here we have new asphalt, so there are some unknowns. Overall, our pace has been lacking, especially on a track where tire wear is crucial. Here, we should be competitive on all compounds, but I’m not sure if we’ll be better in qualifying or the race. We haven’t yet figured out from the simulations what’s affecting our pace. When fighting with other teams in such a tight field, you have to get the most out of your potential. Of course, I’d simply like to win races, but when that’s not possible, you consider other strategies.” – the Dutchman explained during the press conference for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Finally, Max Verstappen downplayed speculation regarding his engine after Helmut Marko all but confirmed a power unit change, which would mean a grid penalty: “I haven’t heard anything yet; we haven’t discussed it. I know I’ll have to take one at some point, so we’ll see when.” – the Red Bull driver concluded.
