Red Bull has a clear weak point. Helmut Marko admitted that he is not at all satisfied with the performance of the RB20, especially after the Mexican Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen received two heavy penalties following his duel with Lando Norris, but the car’s lack of competitiveness also compromised his race. The Red Bull advisor believes it is crucial for the team to regain ground in both championships—Lando Norris has closed the gap to 47 points behind Max Verstappen, while Ferrari has overtaken Red Bull and is now second in the constructors’ standings.
However, Helmut Marko also stated that he does not expect an improvement over the weekend in Brazil. “We cannot afford another race like this,” he said to Sky Germany.
“It will definitely be very difficult. The Brazilian circuit has very slow corners, and that will also be a real problem for us.” – he added.
Reflecting on Mexico, the veteran advisor believes that the problems started on Friday during free practice and continued into Saturday. The real weak point of Red Bull is the slow corners—where McLaren and Ferrari continue to have a substantial speed advantage.
Another possibility could arise in Qatar or Las Vegas, where the track might favor the RB20 single-seater. “But we still need to find some rhythm,” he continued. “We have noticed that we are still losing ground compared to Ferrari and McLaren in the slow corners, so that’s not a good sign. But there are still two circuits left on the calendar, Qatar and Las Vegas, where we should do better.”
Helmut Marko did not hide a bit of optimism, and everything will depend on free practice: “We should be able to find the right setup and reduce the gap with our competitors a bit.” – the Red Bull advisor concluded.
