In an era where social media can amplify even the smallest detail, sometimes a single photograph is enough to reignite speculation across the Formula 1 paddock. That is exactly what happened during media day at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, where Jos Verstappen was spotted in what appeared to be a friendly conversation with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. The image, shared on social media by Julianne Cesaroli, has inevitably reopened discussions about Max Verstappen’s future and Mercedes’ long-standing interest in the Dutch champion.
Jos Verstappen and Toto Wolff: a relationship that continues over time
This is not the first time interactions between Jos Verstappen and Toto Wolff have attracted attention. Two years ago, the pair were frequently linked in conversation, particularly during the turbulent period surrounding the so-called Hornergate controversy. At that time, tensions between Jos Verstappen and Christian Horner had become increasingly visible, with Max Verstappen’s father openly critical of what he viewed as poor leadership within the Red Bull camp.
Christian Horner was eventually removed from his role last year and remains in search of his next destination, but the broader context of internal Red Bull tensions made any interaction between the Verstappen camp and Mercedes especially significant.
Now, a similar image has resurfaced in a very different context. There is no open crisis inside Red Bull, but the timing remains intriguing. Max Verstappen has spent recent months openly criticising Formula 1’s future technical regulations, fuelling speculation that he could even consider leaving the championship before the expiry of his current contract in 2028.
It is also worth remembering that Max Verstappen competes in the GT category using a Mercedes car, although that programme has no direct operational connection to the Formula 1 team. Still, there is an indirect link, given that Mercedes is part of Daimler AG, which owns a 33% stake in the Brackley-based Formula 1 operation. In other words, the connection between the two worlds is not entirely distant or meaningless.
The message suggested by that simple photograph is therefore clear: these are people who continue to talk to one another. It is no secret that Toto Wolff has long admired Max Verstappen’s talent and has closely monitored his career for years, even before ultimately placing his faith in Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Could George Russell be the driver at risk?
Equally, it is no secret that if a realistic opportunity to sign Max Verstappen ever emerged, Mercedes could be willing to completely rethink its driver strategy.
The bigger question would not necessarily concern Andrea Kimi Antonelli, but rather George Russell, who could become the high-profile casualty if Mercedes decided to make room for the four-time world champion.
That said, it is important to be clear: there is no concrete news here, at least not yet. What exists is more of an indication, a pattern, confirmation that communication between the two camps remains active and that there appears to be mutual respect between them.
After all, last summer Max Verstappen was also a guest of Toto Wolff aboard the Mercedes boss’s yacht, an episode that similarly triggered speculation but ultimately led to no concrete developments.

And yet, in the background, this ongoing interaction between the Verstappen camp and Mercedes’ powerful team principal continues to attract attention.
Will it eventually lead to something tangible? At this stage, that remains impossible to say. But one thing is certain: the dialogue between the two sides continues, and in the Formula 1 paddock, that is the kind of detail that never goes unnoticed.
The latest visual confirmation of the strong ties between the Verstappen camp and Mercedes management highlights the incredibly volatile nature of the Formula 1 driver market. While Red Bull attempts to project operational stability following their massive leadership restructurings, the continuous, high-profile meetings between Jos Verstappen and Toto Wolff ensure that Christian Horner’s successor cannot rest easy. Mercedes is clearly playing a calculated, long-term game, keeping their garage door open for the sport’s most dominant driver while concurrently monitoring how their upgraded W17 performs under the pressure of a Sprint weekend. As the paddock prepares for a hyper-competitive weekend on the unforgiving streets of Montreal, the reality that George Russell’s long-term future could hinges entirely on whether Max Verstappen decides to honor his Red Bull contract adds a fascinating layer of internal tension to a team currently fighting to reclaim its world championship crown.
