George Russell’s clever Mercedes deal: Beat Kimi Antonelli in 2026 and 2027 is guaranteed. George Russell confirms a clause in his Mercedes contract could automatically extend him to 2027.

Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, Mercedes 2025

Mercedes’ driver explains

It may seem an exaggeration to say that George Russell’s competitive life is not straightforward, especially now that the British driver has secured a top-tier financial deal for 2026.

Money aside, George Russell is facing a potential rising star within the team (Andrea Kimi Antonelli) and has Toto Wolff as his employer, who has never hidden his willingness to go to great lengths to secure Max Verstappen.

George Russell and Mercedes have officially confirmed the contract renewal for the 2026 Formula 1 season. However, given the context, George Russell wanted a clear clause that would automatically extend his contract into 2027. “I haven’t said this publicly yet, but I have a specific clause that will trigger if I prove myself – George Russell told The Telegraph – so I won’t be in the same situation as this year. Next year, if I achieve a certain objective, and I don’t want to go into details, I will remain 100% with Mercedes in 2027. My future is in my hands.”

It is highly likely that the clause is not tied to winning the world championship but rather to winning the internal Mercedes duel with Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a rivalry that has intensified particularly in this season finale and will play out over the next two rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

With Max Verstappen’s future still the paddock’s worst-kept secret, George Russell has quietly turned what could have been a vulnerable one-year extension into a contract that only he can break. Smart negotiating from a driver who knows exactly how quickly seats can disappear at the very top of Formula 1.
