Max Verstappen is at the centre of the Formula 1 driver market world. “If he moves, it will be chaos,” says former driver Jolyon Palmer on RacingNews365.com, alongside James Hinchcliffe. The two analysed the current market situation, also discussing the possible retirement of Lewis Hamilton from Ferrari.
“Verstappen is the biggest name, without any doubt. If something happens there, it depends on whether he moves to another team: in that case, we will definitely have madness on our hands. If he doesn’t do that, but instead retires from Formula 1, then a seat at Red Bull opens up, which could attract an opportunistic driver from another team,” Palmer explained.
Verstappen currently has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, but his frustrations with the current regulations could push him to leave earlier. Nevertheless, he could also remain until 2027, respecting the agreement.
Former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe also commented on the situation:
“He could also stay because all the top teams are performing at a decent level and there are not that many seats available. I don’t think Lewis will stop, because that is the obvious option. Would Lewis have waited to see the new Ferrari? If it had not been competitive, he would have hung up his helmet and Oliver Bearman would have had a seat ready at Ferrari. I imagine the top teams will remain quite stable. There could still be quite a lot of movement in the lower half of the grid, however.”
In summary, the 2027 Formula 1 driver market remains entirely dependent on the decisions made by its reigning champions. While Max Verstappen’s potential exit or transfer would trigger a chaotic chain reaction across the paddock, the continued performance of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari suggests that the “silly season” might be more focused on the midfield for now. As the sport moves deeper into the current regulatory cycle, the “Verstappen domino” remains the most anticipated event in the world of F1 transfers.
