F1 | Not just wins: Verstappen joins the Grand Chelem elite
With his triumph at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has secured his sixth Grand Slam in Formula 1, equaling Lewis Hamilton and moving closer to the historic record held by Jim Clark.
By winning the Azerbaijan GP, Max Verstappen reached 67 career victories, steadily closing in on two sporting giants, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher. While the count of victories has been regularly updated in recent seasons—testament to the greatness of the four-time world champion—today the Dutch driver achieved a significant milestone.
After securing pole position yesterday, Max Verstappen led every lap of the race, even setting the fastest lap. This feat earned him a Grand Slam, a rare and prestigious achievement in Formula 1.
Indeed, it is extremely difficult to lead every lap, claim the fastest lap, and maintain the top spot secured on Saturday. That is why such recognition does not come around every race weekend.
Furthermore, the Dutch champion had already achieved this feat in the past. With today’s performance, he joins seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton on this exclusive list, tying the Grand Slam count of the Ferrari driver.
The leader of this ranking remains Jim Clark. The “Flying Scot,” world champion in 1963 and 1965, holds the record with 8 Grand Slams.
